This concept of Analysis Paralysis has been plaguing mankind for decades due to the fear of failing. We as humans have been conditioned from young that failing is terrible and if you fail once, the consequences are detrimental to your life forever.
So what is Analysis Paralysis? Basically it is a state of over-analyzing or over-thinking a situation, which leads to no actions ever being taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome.
I have personally been affected by this a lot because I am a perfectionist and I’m sure many of you reading this are as well. One situation that has cost me my time, energy and thought would be buying an online podcasting course that costs $1500USD.
I know, I know, you might say Michael, $1500USD is a lot of money, so there’s no problem that you would take time to see if it works. However, there is a “period” of time of thinking and then there is “paralysis”.
I thought about buying this course for over 2 weeks and it was plaguing my mind everyday, which made me lose focus on what was really important.
Growing my business. In the end I bought that course. However I wasted 2 weeks worth of my time and also took away my focus from my business for a lengthy amount of time.
I don’t want this situation happening to you, so I want to dive deep into the why you have Analysis Paralysis and the way to prevent it.
Stop Fearing Failure
Lets be frank. The real reason that you have analysis paralysis is because you have an inner fear of failing and embarrassing yourself. A lot of this has to do with the conditioning that has been placed on by our parents and society and also partly due to our own egos.
In my case, I was afraid if I bought into the course and made that investment in myself, it would somehow not pay off and I was thinking that there is still a possibility that even after I have learned all of this material, the podcast that I am creating might still fail.
All of this shit about possibly failing and the “what ifs” was floating around my mind constantly. It came to a point where I just ignored all of my thoughts and just bought it.
The reason is because failure isn’t the end of the world. When you fail, it doesn’t mean that you can never succeed. It just means you are now one step closer to achieving success because now you have learned what not to do.
A great quote from Rocky Balboa about failing and getting back up from a failure.
“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”
Don’t fear failure, stop overanalyzing and just do it. Failure is part of success and if you use your whole life to avoid failure, you will fail by default.
Procrastinating & Wasting Time
Do you know how much time you are wasting when you get into this vicious loop of Analysis Paralysis? You could be missing out on weeks to months of your time while you could be doing things that bring you closer to your success.
“The rich invest in time and the poor invest in money” said by famed investor Warren Buffett, one of the top 5 wealthiest on the planet. You can always make more money, however you can never make more time. A human life only has so many years in it and you have to make the most out of every second because there are no guarantees.
While you are paralyzed about whether or not to invest in a course, a book or a mentor, you can instead be improving your skills and making a difference. Stop overthinking, Start Investing in Yourself and Start Making an Impact!
Stop Listening to Your Inner Devil
Your inner devil is your enemy when making decisions. When you take a long time to think and analyze, all of your inner doubts and devils will come out. All of this shit will appear in your mind, “Can I do it?’, “Will I Succeed?”, “Is it worth the investment?”, “What if I invest in it and I don’t get my return on investment?”.
Have you ever thought about the things that you say to yourself? 90% of the time it doesn’t even make any sense. So starting today, I want you to stop listening to that inner devil and start doing, because the only way to halt your inner doubts is to perform and achieve results! I want to end off this blog post with an inspirational quote from the 50 Billion-Dollar man, which I live by religiously.
“Just Fucking Do It.” – Dan Pena
I hope that this has given you the motivation to get off your ass and starting getting things done!
